Sited at a complex five-road intersection near Shanghai’s historic Jiangwan Area – the urban center during the Nationalist Era – the design of this bridge and its amenities was informed by three axes representing past, present and future innovation which converge to create a fluid, organic form, overlooking the historic district as well as the currently bustling Wujiaochang urban hub. On top of basic connectivity, the design aims to activate these “spaces in between” in urban areas that often become neglected as pure infrastructure. The two-tiered design allows for the lower level of the bridge for pedestrians, while the upper level forms a stepped arena viewing landscape and a prime venue for the public to appreciate art, culture, and nature, giving opportunity to create a destination, community builder, as well as urban regenerator in itself.
